Stress

Everyone can relate to that day of work that just started off wrong. When you have to be there at seven o’clock and you walk into customers outside waiting for you. And then every call you get is from screaming customers complaining about the dumbest things while you have to just sit and listen and keep your mouth shut because “the customer is always right!” Or that day you walk into school and your sweating from walking ten miles to the classroom from your car. Then you get into the classroom late and the door slams behind you, so everyone turns to look at you. Then the teacher announces that you are late to pretty much embarrass you, thinking that will make you not be late anymore but really that just makes you mad and not want to go to her class even more.

This is just a few things that causes stress in life. Stress is caused by something that makes you over think and freak out constantly about things because you are worried for probably no big reason. Stress can give you headaches, make you sick to your stomach, or even sometimes make you cry or want to scream in anger. Stress is that little green monster that sits on your shoulder, and mocks you. It can control you and take over your life. Because no matter how hard you try, you usually can’t control it.

Said from experience, stress is horrible. Stressing about school, work, family, friends, boyfriends, cars, money….anything. I am one to stress about probably anything possible. For a while, I was getting really bad headaches. I dealt with it for about six months. After I finally got fed up with it, I started to get upset, then it turned into anger, then it turned into stress. I would get pains in my chest from how stressed I was about my headaches because I knew that every morning I would wake up with it and every night I would go to sleep with it. I never knew what to do to make it go away. Finally I went to the doctors and got things figured out. Ever since I have not been having headaches anymore, I have no experienced any of those chest pains, and I haven’t felt so stressed anymore.

If you are stressing about anything, there is some approaches you can take at dealing with it so that you don’t allow it to take over your life. First you have to identify the source of stress in your life. Then you have to think about how you currently cope with stress. Do you deal with it in a healthy way such as doing yoga or do you deal with it in an unhealthy way such as smoking?

One way to manage stress is to avoid unnecessary stress. Learn how to say “no.” Avoid people who stress you out. Take control of your environment. Avoid hot-button topics. And pare down your to-do list.

Another way to manage stress is to Alter the situation. Express your feelings instead of bottling them up. Be willing to compromise. Be more assertive. And manage your time better.

A third way is to adapt to the stressor. Reframe problems, look at the big picture, adjust your standards, and focus on the positive.

A forth way to manage stress is to accept the things you can’t change. Don’t try to control the uncontrollable. Look for the upside, share your feelings and learn to forgive.

Another way to cope with stress is to make time for fun and relaxation. Set aside relaxation time. Go for a walk, take a long bath, light some candles, or listen to music. Connect with others, do something you enjoy every day and keep your sense of humor.

And lastly, adopt a healthy lifestyle. Exercise daily and eat a healthy diet. Reduce caffeine and sugar. Avoid alcohol, cigarettes and drugs. And get enough sleep every night.
